DVD Update (07/10/2012 - 20/10/2012)

Welcome to an abridged DVD update, where I just haven't brought too much compared to other weeks - which at the very least is on time - I didn't do too much shopping this fortnight, but there is stuff I brought which I very much like, so there is no reason to complain.

Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Stars - the sequel to My Lucky Stars (and Winners and Sinners) mixes broad comedy with cool martial arts and for me it very much works, but I could understand others not liking that mix, Rosamund Kwan is a great female foil to the horny Lucky Stars because she is so pretty (and we get her in a wet nighty which is quite a lot for an Hong Kong film of this time period). Anyway, any film with Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao is sure to have cool fighting.

Red Cliff - The Special Edition
Dragon Lord

The Cabin In The Woods - one of the best horror films for such a long time, when I went to the cinema to see this I purposely ignored reading or watching anything about it (the fact Joss Whedon wrote and produced it was enough for me to give it blind faith) which I recommend anybody is the way to see it.

Perfect Blue - A 1997 anime that Darren Aronofosky brought the remake rights too and he's all but officially remade it (Black Swan being a clear comparison).

Yakuza Graveyard

Urotsukidoji - Legend Of The Overfiend / Urotsukidoji - Legend Of The Demon Womb - Legend of The Overfriend was my first experience of anime back in the early 90s and was absolutely 100% the wrong choice for someone who was about 11 at the time, it's amazing how much of the film I remembered after nearly 20 years but granted most or that was either dirty and/or odd, which the film is plenty of both, curious to watch the sequel as well which I've never seen.

Ring 0
Psychic Wars
Hard Boiled - Criterion Collection

South Park - Imaginationland - South Park is perhaps the most constantly funny animated series.

Mr. Deeds Goes To Town
Safe Men
Cool Hand Luke
Dragon From Russia
I Confess
Saboteur

Hour Of The Wolf - 4000+ DVDs and up until now I haven't owned a single Ingmar Bergman movie, I have never seen this this film, so I don't know if it's a poor or great place to start.

Confessions Of A Shopaholic - in an example of how eclectic my tastes are I brought this at the same time as Hour Of The Wolf. This is a fun film.

Dharma and Greg Season 1 - Jenna Elfman as never been more cute or charming in this sit-com that is likeable but pretty much run of the mill.

Moon

Assault Of Final Rival - Multiple sources say this is directed by Godfrey Ho, so I'm going to go with that.

Vertigo - so the film that recently replaced Citizen Kane after ages and ages as the number one film of all time according to Sight and Sound (I think) should have been added to my collection much earlier since I've been collecting Hitchcock films.

Frenzy - Hitchcock's second to last film which I haven't watched yet, I noticed it was an 18 which no other Hitchcock film is though.

Waltzes From Vienna / Downhill - This is a French release I got off eBay that took an amazing 3 days to arrive. Downhill is an early Hitchcock from the silent era which starred Ivor Novello, well into his 30s playing a teenage (which proves how long that has been happening) and Waltzes From Vienna is a pretty boring music biography about Strauss which Hitchcock only made to get out his contract with a studio. Still a good DVD worth having for the Hitchcock enthusiast.

See you (hopefully) in exactly two weeks!
