Top 5 Women Of March 2012

Okay, it's time for the March 2012 update of the top 5 women, I'm of course giving you a top 10 like I do every  month to show you who nearly made the list and to do totals that count towards the end of the year.

10 - Liv Tyler / 9 - Elizabeth Banks / 8 - Kaley Cuoco / 7 - Mayim Balik / 6 - Alyson Hannigan

5 - Jayma Mays

Gets on the list by just plain adorable in poor and at best below average movies I have seen her in this month.
4 - Billie Piper

You just can't deny she was really good in Doctor Who.
3 - Ellie Kemper

I somehow got addicted to her dancing this month.

2 - Ellen Page

I've been digging Ellen Page for a while but SUPER actually helped her change a small crush into a huge crush, if this continues I can see been towards the top in the year end list.

1 - Kristen Bell

Kristen Bell gets number 1 again for the simple reason she is Kristen Bell

The Cabin In The Woods

I was lucky enough to get tickets for a preview screening of CABIN IN THE WOODS, directed by Drew Goddard and written by Joss Whedon. A film I knew very little about - and I liked it the way - it just seems so rare that I see a film with knowing so little about it was refreshing to watch a movie this way -

I got to say my opinion of the movie is that I really liked it, I'm not going to write too much here to give it away, because the film is still a few weeks away from it - but it completely flipped on it's head the expectations.

The film had likeable characters and I don't think anybody in a million years could guess what the climax of the movie would be like...

A few Joss Whedon alumni pop up in the movie, the biggest role going to Fran Kranz (Topher), and there are some other familiar faces in supporting roles.

I'll talk about it more later, because from what I've seen or read, little as actually been written about the plot of the film.

I actually can't wait to own this on DVD (or Blu Ray).

DVD and Blu Ray Update (11/03/2012 - 24/03/2012)

Welcome to another super awesome DVD and Blu Ray update, you should all be proud of me, since lately I've been getting them updated on time.

The Ricky Gervais Show Series 1 - if it wasn't for Ricky Gervais name recognition this should be called The Karl Pilkington Show, because there wouldn't be a show without him, all the laughs come from him.

My Girl 2 - doesn't have anything like the sucker punch of SPOILER Macaulay Culkin getting killed like the first movie SPOILER END

Honeymoon In Vegas - James Caan totally makes this movie, he is the sort of the villain of the piece, but you sort of get drawn into the stuff he's saying to Sarah Jessica Parker.

Erin Brockovich - while I take true stories with a grain of salt, at best their is an element of truth in there somewhere, this is probably one of Julia Roberts best performances, I am saying this because I've found a lot of her roles quite cold (which in the case of Closer, worked in their favour) and this role was very engaging for her.

College Road Trip - another title from the box of DVDs that was going, only picked it up because it looked like it was Brenda Song on the cover (I was right). Not entirely awful Disney movie, Margo Harshman, who I only really knew from the short-lived sit-com Run Of The House, was good fun in a supporting role.

Flesh Gordon 2

Office Space - flop on release but gained a strong cult following, really like this so it's sort of a mystery why it's took me this long to get it on DVD because it's a film I really like, I adore Gary Cole and Stephen Root in this movie. Why is that Mike Judge films can't find an audience on initial release?

Paul Blart - Mall Cop - probably the worst Happy Madison film I've seen, and I am sure there are people out there would just say they are all as bad as each other but I've digged many of them enough. Mostly just flat throughout.

Buffalo Soldiers

Date Movie / Epic Movie / Sports Movie - Epic Movie really isn't as awful as I'd heard, it's not fantastic by any means, Jayma Mays is adorable and fun, but it does seem a bit pointless taking the piss out of Borat and Nacho Libre among others (two comedies) and a joke involving Wolverine was already used in X-Men 2. Sports Movie (or The Comebacks)  was worth a watch thanks to a lot of game performances (it was worth making a bad pun about). Date Movie I saw a few years back and thought Alyson Hannigan delivered a fun performance. So there you have it on this blog Ive defended Uwe Boll and now the Seltzer/Friedberg movies, if some movie fans came across this blog I's be onto a shit-storm.

The 300 Spartans

The Lost Boys - it's one of those 80s films I have an affection for, even though it's probably more dated then most of the other 80s films I have an affection for.

Primeval Series 1

Inviticus - Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela just seems like the most natural casting choice in the history of cinema.

Ghost Town - on second viewing it got worse for me, the tone isn't too good and there could have been so much more done with the material, while The Frighteners (another film about a man being able to see ghosts, but done in a different tone) got better the more I saw it.

The Curse Of King Tut's Tomb / Merlin's Apprentice / Blackbeard / The Poseidon Adventure - 4 made for TV mini-series I picked up mostly based off The Poseidon Adventure which was not an amazing version by any means.

Get Shorty - This is the film that probably brought Elmore Leonard to my attention and it's still one of John Travolta's coolest post-comeback with Pulp Fiction roles (not counting Pulp Fiction).

Despicable Me - while Pixar is still the benchmark for computer animated movies, every so often one of  the  other studios' efforts get through to me and it's that Despicable Me left me happy.

Notting Hill - I prefer this movie to Four Weddings, but I don't know I think most of the negativity I feel towards this movie is aimed towards Julia Roberts, her character (a few moments aside) just leaves me feeling cold (which I said earlier in this update), I also didn't think much to Gina McKee's performance in this movie, Emma Chambers was likeable in it though just to show I'm not completely against the women of this movie.

Gosford Park
Police Assassins
A Scanner Darkly

Somewhere - Sofia Coppola's film that seem to come in under the radar, the big reason I got this was because I knew Ellie Kemper was in it. Not put it on yet.

Porridge - The Movie

The Constant Gardener - while overall it wasn't the best film of 2005 for me, it was still a much better movie to me then the eventual Oscar biggies Crash and Brokeback Mountain.

Island In The Sky
Where Eagles Dare
Holiday Inn

Beverly Hills Ninja - As much as Chris Farley is missed, films like Beverly Hills Ninja prove he wasn't exactly knocking them out of the park when he was alive - Tommy Boy, was his best starring role at it was good rather then excellent -.

Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed
Nil By The Mouth
Brotherhood Of The Wolf
Hi-De-Hi Series 1&2

SUPER - I really digged this movie. ELLEN PAGE really was amazing in this movie, it would make a perfect companion piece with Kick-Ass, both are about real people trying to be superheroes, this one as a much more meaner edge though. Blu Ray buy (11th so far)

The Muppet Show Season 1

I got rid of two UFC DVDs because I thought the money I got for them outweighed how much re-watching I'd get off of them.

That's it for another update, catch you in 2...

Update

Hello, I'm updating you all on my life. I'm not doing too bad - I've got a bit of flu when I write this and there's some uncertainties in my life, but I'm in good spirits. I'm doing good with the family that are still around.

DVD and Blu Ray Update (26/02/2012 - 10/03/2012)

Here we are with a short update and actually on time - which for the foreseeable future will be a common thing, eBay purchases are going to be very minimal for a while and just the amount of money I'll have spare to spend will also be a lot less. Real life just keeps getting in the way and there is the crap possibility that I could end up selling stuff as time goes on, but I'm trying to be some DVDs just to keep part of my life happy - anyway on with the actual update...

Behind The Mask

The Haunted Mansion - I've been on the Disney ride which it's based on and despite it's corniness is a cool ride but this film which I thought I would have actually caught by now just falls flat.

Meet Dave - I think despite the films obvious flaws there is something I liked about this film and I'm not sure what it is.

Stardust - I really liked it, there hasn't been a proper fun fantasy movie like this in so long it feels like - I was totally digging this movie all the way through and it also helps you've also got people like Robert De Niro who is an absolute delight here.

Prince Of The Sun - Another fun movie, my Brother got this for me, and like most of Cynthia Rothrock's Hong Kong movies are at the very least good watches.

Raging Phoenix
Pret-รก-Porter

Hot Tub Time Machine - This film was just lacking and this is coming from somebody who loves time-travel stories. There's a decent cast here but it's just a weak film overall.

Clash Of The Titans
Supergirl

Gross Anatomy - The tenth Blu Ray in my collection and it cost me... (drum roll)... 99p... the cheapest I ever paid for a Blu Ray yet. I have yet to watch it so can't really comment on it.

Holy Man - while there is good moments here and there, it's a film that is actually supposed to be from when  Eddie Murphy was back on top from post-Nutty Professor, it just feels like a film Murphy would have accepted between 90 and 95.

The Night Flier
Hogfather

All In Good Taste - I'll start off by saying I haven't been tricked by the cover saying it's Jim Carrey movie, I know he's only in the movie briefly but I wanted to be a completest, but it's still a better film from a completest point of view from the one at the very bottom of this entry

No Code Of Conduct - I got this cause I collect Mark Dacascos films, don't know too much about it, it does also star Charlie and Martin Sheen though.

Deck The Halls

Blackpool - watching the first episode makes me think of it as a spiritual successor to the amazing Singing Detective and after watching the first episode I'm really digging it - David Morrissey and David Tennant where great in the first episode.

Igby Goes Down

Deadwood Season 1 - really, really digging this, kind of wish I'd seen it back in the mid-00s, but you can't see everything. A lot of great performances particularly Ian McShane who just's amazing here (and who would have thought he was just Lovejoy to me at one point). Last episode I watched at the time of writing was the first appearance of KB.

Point Break

Deadwood Season 2 - you would think with the second season appearing underneath the first season on the list would mean I would get them together, but now partway through me getting engrossed with the first series I was lucky enough to find the second season for cheap, so I'll probably go straight onto this after finishing the first.

Doctor Who Series 1 - I've got about 10 Doctor Who titles before this and they've all been of the pre-2005 variety so I am very glad to finally add something from the Russell T. Davies era because it clearly has better special effects then the original era but as great writing aswell. Christopher Ecclestone and Billie Piper are great it's kind of sad there wasn't a longer run (as great as Tennant was who came after him)

Going Overboard - rancid turd of a movie that is in IMDBs bottom 100 got this because it's one of the few Adam Sandler films, the shopkeeper ended up giving me though because he didn't want to change a note (I brought this and DW at the same time). Billy Bob Thornton and Billy Zane pop up before bigger success aswell.

Davy Jones R.I.P.

Davy Jones has passed away of an heart attack aged 66. I believe The Monkees where underrated in what they contributed to music and they did many a great song. You'll be missed Davy!

Top 5 Women Of February 2012

Welcome to the Top 5 Women Of February, it's a simple format 5 females who I've enjoyed the work of this morning.

Here are the other women who make this list a top 10 for the end of year totals

10 - Charisma Carpenter / 9 - Alyson Hannigan / 8 - Alona Tal / 7 - Anna Faris /6 - Amanda Seyfried.

Now onto the top 5 ---
5 - Lindsay Ellis (aka The Nostalgia Chick)

Like her male counterpart (The Nostalgia Critic), they both offer a funny, sometimes cynical but an often very entertaining show, she reminds me of Janeane Garofalo (I mean that as a compliment).

4 - Tina Majorino
3 - Parminder Nagra
2 - Emma Stone

Emma Stone appeared in three films I revisited in the last month - Superbad, Easy-A and The House Bunny.
1 - Kristen Bell

The least surprising number one in the history of like... ever, I moved how and the first thing I watched via the DVD player was KB's big break - Veronica Mars - which still holds up as a truly amazing show.
